Going to an Event Alone: How to Make It Feel Less Awkward

Attending an event by yourself can feel daunting, but a little preparation can make walking through the door much easier.

The hardest part is often arriving

Walking into a room alone can make us feel as though everyone notices us. In reality, most people are thinking about themselves: where to sit, who they know, whether they are late and whether they look comfortable.

Once the event begins, the initial discomfort often settles. The aim is not to feel perfectly relaxed from the first moment; it is simply to get yourself through the door.

Give yourself a simple job

Arrive with one small goal. It could be to speak to one new person, learn one useful thing, introduce yourself to the organiser or stay until the first break.

A manageable goal gives you something to focus on other than whether you look awkward. If you achieve it, anything else is a bonus.

Use the event itself to start conversations

You do not need a brilliant opening line. Ask whether someone has attended before, what brought them along, whether they know the speaker or what they thought of the session.

Shared context does much of the conversational work for you. A compliment on something practical — a notebook, a presentation point or a local recommendation — can also be an easy place to begin.

Have an exit plan — but give it a chance

Knowing you can leave can reduce anxiety. Drive yourself if possible, know where you parked and give yourself permission to go when you have had enough.

At the same time, try not to leave in the first uncomfortable five minutes. Give the room, and yourself, a little time to warm up.
