You Are Allowed to Decide How Much of Your Story You Share

Personal stories can create connection, but privacy is also a valid choice. You decide which parts of your experience belong in public.

Sharing can be powerful, but it is not compulsory

We are often encouraged to tell our stories. Personal experiences can help other people feel understood and create meaningful conversations.

But a valuable story does not automatically need to become a public story. You do not have to turn a personal experience into content, education or inspiration for other people if that does not feel right to you.

Different people can have different access

You might share one version with close family, another with trusted friends and very little publicly. Boundaries do not make your story less authentic. They simply recognise that trust has levels.

It can be helpful to decide in advance what topics, details or questions you are comfortable discussing, especially in situations where people may be curious but not necessarily entitled to an answer.

Consider who else is inside the story

Family stories often involve other people. Before sharing publicly, it can be useful to consider whether identifiable details expose someone else’s private experience as well as your own.

You can tell the truth about your life while still choosing language and details that protect yourself and others.

You can change your mind

Something you were comfortable discussing years ago may feel private now. Something you once kept quiet may eventually feel safe to share.

You are allowed to revise your boundaries. Your story is not a debt you owe an audience.
