Finding Your People When You Feel Like You Don’t Quite Fit Anywhere

Belonging is not always about finding people exactly like you. Sometimes it begins with finding spaces where you can be yourself.

Not fitting neatly into a box

There are times when the groups around us no longer feel quite right. Children grow up, careers shift, relationships change, we move towns, start businesses, become carers, retire, or simply discover that our interests are different now.

Feeling between communities can be surprisingly lonely, particularly when it looks as though everyone else already has a place where they belong.

Look for shared values, not identical lives

Your people do not necessarily need to be the same age, have the same job or share your entire background. Often the strongest connections are built around shared values: kindness, curiosity, creativity, humour, community involvement or a willingness to support one another.

Looking for these qualities can open up possibilities you might miss if you are searching only for people whose lives look very similar to yours.

Try places built around doing something

Conversation can feel easier when it happens alongside an activity. Workshops, volunteering, book clubs, gardening groups, business networks, exercise classes and community projects give people something to talk about before they know each other well.

You are not walking into a room with the sole task of making friends. You are simply participating in something that interests you.

Belonging can grow slowly

Sometimes we expect an immediate feeling of “these are my people”. More often, belonging grows through small moments of recognition over time.

Give yourself permission to visit a space more than once before deciding whether you belong there. Other people may need time to recognise you too.
